The Oodles
Ever since I was a kid I loved the idea of fairies living in my backyard. The world just seemed so exciting from a perspective one inch off the ground, so imagining life at an ant’s size has always sparked my curiosity. The Oodles embody this childhood fantasy, inviting you to imagine the extraordinary hidden right under your nose in the jungle that is your own front lawn.
Each Oodle lives in a photograph captured by my Canon Rebel, which, though beautiful in their own right, I then use as a canvas for my digital illustration to give life to a new critter. Originally conceived for the Rocktown Arts’ 6x6x30 show, this series of thirty images spawned from my love for macro photography, focusing on the tiny details found in the foliage and old brick around my house and local parks.
Satisfied with my work, and always eager to enhance a project, I followed up by curating an all-star booklet showcasing my favorite Oodle illustrations, alongside the original untouched photographs, in a double sided fold so readers can get whichever experience they prefer depending on which side they read it from. I promise that makes more sense if you see it in person — it’s really pretty cool.
